Background:

  • Chronic lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, presents a significant clinical challenge.
  • Current treatment options for chronic lateral epicondylitis have varying degrees of efficacy and patient satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of real acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture in treating chronic lateral epicondylitis.
  • To assess the impact of acupuncture on pain intensity, maximal strength, and arm disability.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, investigator- and patient-blinded, controlled clinical study was conducted.
  • 23 patients received real acupuncture, and 22 received sham acupuncture, with 10 treatments over several weeks.
  • Outcomes including maximal strength, pain intensity (verbal rating scale), and arm disability (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire) were measured at baseline, 2 weeks, and 2 months post-treatment.
