  • Preventive Dentistry

Background:

  • Dental prophylaxis aims to remove plaque and stains.
  • Conventional prophylaxis pastes vary in abrasiveness and efficacy.
  • Perlite is a novel abrasive agent for dental applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a new perlite-containing prophylaxis paste.
  • Comparison with conventional pastes regarding abrasion, cleaning, and polishing.
  • Assessment of clinical potential using a Prophylaxis Paste Index.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative study of perlite paste vs. conventional pastes.
  • Evaluation of relative dentin and enamel abrasion.
  • Assessment of cleaning ability and surface roughness (Ra).
  • Application using rubber cups and nylon brushes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Perlite paste demonstrated low dentin and enamel abrasion.
  • Good cleaning ability and low surface roughness were observed.
  • The perlite-based paste outperformed others in the Prophylaxis Paste Index.
  • Consistent results were achieved with both rubber cups and nylon brushes.

Conclusions:

  • Perlite-containing prophylaxis paste is effective and safe for dentin and enamel.
  • It offers superior cleaning and polishing with minimal abrasion.
  • Potential for universal application in professional dental hygiene.
