    Summary

    Background:

    • The lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio (L/S ratio) in amniotic fluid is a key indicator of fetal lung maturity.
    • Stumptail macaque monkeys (Macaca arctoides) are utilized as a non-human primate model for reproductive studies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the temporal changes in the amniotic fluid L/S ratio during the second half of pregnancy in Macaca arctoides.
    • To assess the utility of Macaca arctoides as a model for studying factors influencing fetal lung maturity.

    Main Methods:

    • Serial amniocenteses were performed throughout the second half of pregnancy in ten dated pregnancies across nine Macaca arctoides.
    • The L/S ratio was determined from amniotic fluid samples collected via amniocentesis.

    Conclusions:

    • The amniotic fluid L/S ratio in Macaca arctoides follows a developmental trajectory similar to humans, supporting its use as a model for fetal lung maturity.
    • A rapid rise in the L/S ratio before 130 days may suggest accelerated pulmonary surfactant production.
