Duplication of the common bile duct is a rare congenital anomaly. This condition can lead to complications like angiocholitis, requiring diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatology
  • Surgical Anatomy

Background:

  • Congenital anomalies of the biliary tract are uncommon.
  • Duplication of the common bile duct is a rare variant with potential clinical significance.

Observation:

  • Two cases of common bile duct duplication were identified.
  • These anomalies were discovered following episodes of angiocholitis.

Findings:

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) successfully diagnosed the biliary duplication.
  • ERCP also facilitated a therapeutic intervention for the presenting complication.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis of biliary tract anomalies is crucial for appropriate management.
  • ERCP is a valuable tool for both diagnosing and treating complications arising from rare biliary ductal abnormalities.
