Training the assessors for the General Medical Council's Performance Procedures

Medical performance assessment is a critical component of maintaining professional standards. Prior research has established that peer review can identify performance issues in clinical settings. However, the effectiveness of such assessments depends heavily on the training and preparation of those conducting the evaluations. While general principles of peer review exist, the specific application in medical specialties remains underexplored. No prior work had resolved how to standardize assessor training across diverse specialties. That uncertainty drove the development of a structured training program. The General Medical Council (GMC) recognized the need for a consistent approach to assessors' preparation. This gap motivated the design of a program that simulates real-world assessment scenarios. The goal was to ensure that assessors could apply standardized procedures across specialties. This paper addresses the challenge of training assessors for performance evaluations.

The study aimed to describe the training program developed for assessors involved in the GMC's performance procedures.
