Summary

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) causes progressive brain atrophy, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. MRI studies reveal significant cerebral hemisphere involvement, especially in the frontal lobe, in MSA patients.

Background:

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cerebral hemispheric involvement in multiple system atrophy (MSA) using MRI.
  • To quantify the progression of brain atrophy in MSA patients.
  • To correlate MRI findings with pathological examination in autopsied cases.

  • MRI scans were performed on nine MSA patients and 85 healthy controls.
  • Measurements of cerebral hemisphere and lobe volumes relative to intracranial volume were taken.
