Detection of thyroid cysts by ultrasonic examination

Ultrasonic examination of 80 thyroid nodules was carried out in order to detect fluid-filled lesions of the gland. The results of preoperative ultrasonic examinations were compared with the findings at surgery. For the ultrasonic diagnosis "cyst", a predictive value of 88% was calculated. It is concluded that ultrasonic examination represents a reliable tool for the detection of thyroid cysts.
