Summary

This study reports the first known case of an intraocular teratoma in a mouse. The teratoma, found in an enlarged eye, contained various tissues including smooth muscle, fat, neural tissue, and intestinal epithelium.

Background:

  • Teratomas are germ cell tumors containing diverse tissue types.
  • Intraocular tumors are rare, with teratomas being exceptionally uncommon within the eye.

Observation:

  • A 4.5-month-old B6.129S2-Trp53tm1Tyj mouse presented with a significantly enlarged left eye.
  • Histopathological examination revealed a teratoma within the eye, displacing normal structures.

Findings:

  • The intraocular teratoma was composed of multiple germ layer derivatives: smooth muscle (mesoderm), white fat (mesoderm), neural tissue (ectoderm), and villous intestinal epithelium (endoderm).
  • The intestinal epithelium resembled that of the small intestine.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of teratoma presentation.
  • It provides a potential new model for studying intraocular tumor development and the behavior of germ cell tumors in a novel anatomical location.
  • Further research may elucidate the specific mechanisms leading to intraocular teratoma formation in this genetic background.
