Area of Science:

  • Neonatal intensive care
  • Infectious diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Home birth with non-sterile umbilical cord care poses significant infection risks.
  • Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening condition requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Observation:

  • A 4-day-old neonate presented with apneic attacks, umbilical sepsis, and septicemia.
  • Umbilical cord was cut with unclean scissors and treated with chimney soot.
  • Pasteurella gallinarum, a Gram-negative bacillus, was identified as the causative agent from blood, CSF, and urine.

Findings:

  • The neonate was diagnosed with anemia (hemoglobin 10.0 g/dL).
  • Pasteurella gallinarum was identified as the pathogen.
  • The organism was susceptible to penicillin, amikacin, cefotaxime, and gentamicin.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Improper umbilical cord care can lead to severe neonatal infections.
  • Pasteurella gallinarum can cause overwhelming sepsis in neonates.
  • Prompt and appropriate antimicrobial therapy is crucial but may not always prevent fatal outcomes in severe neonatal sepsis.
