Summary

Airplane travel may increase stroke risk in young adults with a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This condition, combined with long flights, can lead to paradoxical embolism and stroke, a potentially preventable condition.

Background:

  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are recognized risks associated with long-duration air travel.

  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms and establish preventive strategies.
