Complications of choledochal cysts (CCs) are frequent in adults and those with combined intra- and extrahepatic cysts. Safe surgical excision of choledochal cysts is achievable even with complications.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • Choledochal cysts (CCs) can lead to serious complications.
  • Understanding these complications is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence, types, and presentation of complications in patients with choledochal cysts.
  • To evaluate surgical outcomes in patients with complicated choledochal cysts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from 81 patients with choledochal cysts.
  • Detailed review of patient demographics, cyst types (Todani classification), prior treatments, and complications.

Main Results:

  • Sixteen patients (20%) presented with complications, predominantly adults (94%) and those with Todani type-IVa cysts (63%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complications were equally divided between infective and noninfective types (50% each).
  • Choledochal cyst excision was successful in 88% of complicated cases, with no mortality or major postoperative issues.
  • Conclusions:

    • Complications of choledochal cysts are more prevalent in adults and patients with combined intra- and extrahepatic involvement (Todani type-IVa).
    • Surgical excision of choledochal cysts is safe and effective, even in the presence of complications.
