Background:

The Gerontological Apperception Test (GAT) is a tool for assessing older adults.
Existing GAT scoring may lack differentiation.
A revised scoring system is needed to capture complex aspects of aging.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate a revised, more differentiated scoring system for the GAT.
To determine the reliability and validity of new GAT variables.

Main Methods:

Administered the GAT to 102 older adults (mean age 68.3 years).
Developed new scoring criteria for 20 GAT variables across interpersonal, health, and intrapsychic dimensions.
Calculated interscorer agreement and conducted correlational analyses with age and cognitive measures.

12 of 20 dimension scores correlated significantly with chronological age.
