Insights
Vertical HIV transmission in Poland has decreased significantly since 1994 due to prophylactic strategies. Early HIV testing for pregnant women is crucial to further reduce pediatric HIV infections.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Infectious Diseases
- Epidemiology
Context:
- Vertical HIV transmission remains a global health concern.
- Poland has implemented strategies to combat pediatric HIV infection.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the rate of vertical HIV transmission in Poland.
- To assess the impact of prophylactic strategies on reducing HIV transmission from mother to child.
Summary:
- A study evaluated 132 children born to HIV-positive mothers in Poland.
- Vertical HIV transmission rates decreased from 25% (1989-1994) to 21.4% after implementing prophylactic strategies in September 1994.
- With prophylaxis, the transmission rate dropped to 1.8%, highlighting the effectiveness of interventions.
Impact:
- Prophylactic programs are essential for diminishing pediatric HIV infections globally.
- The findings underscore the importance of voluntary HIV testing for women before pregnancy to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Objective:
To evaluate vertical HIV transmission rate in Poland.
Methods:
132 children born to HIV positive mothers were evaluated and their HIV infection status was established.
Main Observations And Results:
There are 60 HIV-infected children in Poland. 92% of them have been infected perinataly. From 1989 to 1994 the rate of vertical transmission was 25%. Since September 1994, when prophylactic strategies were started, the rate has decreased to 21.4% (in children with prophylaxis to 1.8%).
Conclusions:
Vertical HIV infection prophylactic programs rely on women's knowledge about their HIV infection status and are the only way to diminish pediatric HIV infection worldwide. The authors show difficulty of providing proper medical care of HIV positive women in Poland and underly the need of voluntary HIV testing for all women before pregnancy.
