Background:

  • A new one-component naphthalene type epoxy resin was utilized as an adhesive for circuit board reinforcement in an electronics manufacturing setting.
  • The adhesive formulation included diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 1,6-bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)naphthalene epoxy resins, hardened with methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA).

Observation:

  • A significant proportion of workers (15 out of 54, 27.8%) developed work-related dermatitis.
  • The hands were the most frequently affected area, with a short mean latent period of 2.2 weeks.
  • Dermatitis was linked to specific tasks like filling dispensers and manual adhesive application, with workers initially lacking protective gloves.

Findings:

  • The study could not pinpoint the specific causative agent or differentiate between allergic and irritant contact dermatitis due to a lack of patch testing.
  • A high percentage of affected workers (66.7%) required medication, and 60% were reassigned to different roles.
  • The symptoms were closely associated with direct contact during adhesive handling processes.

  • Minimizing occupational exposure to epoxy resins through stringent hygiene practices, including the mandatory use of protective gloves, is crucial.
