Summary

People activate perceptual symbols when understanding language, as demonstrated by faster recognition of implied object shapes. This research supports the role of sensory experiences in cognitive processes during reading.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Language comprehension involves more than just decoding words.
  • The role of sensory information in abstract thought is a key area of research.
  • Perceptual symbols represent abstract concepts through sensory experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether perceptual symbols are activated during language comprehension.
  • To determine if visual imagery influences sentence processing.
  • To test the hypothesis that sensory information is integral to understanding meaning.

Main Methods:

  • Participants read sentences implying object shapes based on location.
  • Subjects viewed line drawings of objects and judged recognition or naming.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Reaction times were measured to assess processing efficiency.
  • Main Results:

    • Faster response times were observed when pictured object shapes matched sentence-implied shapes.
    • A mismatch between implied and pictured shapes led to slower responses.
    • This indicates that visual information is automatically accessed during comprehension.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that perceptual symbols are routinely activated during language comprehension.
    • Visual imagery plays a functional role in understanding written text.
    • This provides evidence for embodied cognition in language processing.
