Summary

Electroconvulsive shock (ECS) did not increase prolactin without ketanserin. With ketanserin, ECS still increased prolactin, suggesting serotonin does not significantly impact ECS-induced prolactin release.

  • The role of serotonin in electroconvulsive shock (ECS)-induced prolactin release is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the involvement of serotonin-2 (5-HT(2)) receptors in ECS-induced prolactin secretion in rabbits.

Main Methods:

  • Serum prolactin levels were measured in rabbits before and after ECS.
  • Experiments were conducted both with and without pretreatment with ketanserin, a 5-HT(2) receptor blocker.

Main Results:

  • ECS did not elevate prolactin levels in rabbits without ketanserin pretreatment.
  • Ketanserin pretreatment lowered baseline prolactin and resulted in post-ECS prolactin levels twice the new baseline, similar to levels without ketanserin.
