Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) temporarily disrupted eye movements and vestibular function in depressive patients. These neurological effects resolved within two days, indicating transient disturbances from ECT.

Background:

  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for severe depression.
  • Potential neurological side effects of ECT, particularly on eye movements and vestibular function, require thorough investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the immediate and short-term effects of bilateral ECT on eye coordination and vestibular function in patients with depression.

Main Methods:

  • Nine patients with depression underwent saccadic, pursuit tracking, and Hallpike caloric vestibular tests before, immediately after, and two days post-ECT.
  • Objective measures of eye movement accuracy and vestibular response were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Immediately after ECT, six of nine patients showed saccadic dysmetria (impaired fast eye movements).
