  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combining clozapine with ECT.
  • To assess clinical response in patients with treatment-refractory psychosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 12 patients at McLean Hospital (1990-1991).
  • Patients received combination therapy with clozapine (up to 550 mg daily) and ECT.

Main Results:

  • No adverse effects were reported during the combination therapy.
  • Clinical improvement was observed: 3 marked, 1 moderate, 4 minimal, 2 minimal to no response, 2 no response.

Conclusions:

  • The combination of clozapine and ECT appears safe.
  • This combination may be a viable option for select patients with treatment-refractory psychosis.
