Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate autonomic testing abnormalities in somatization disorder patients.
  • To specifically assess central baroreceptor sensitivity in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-one somatization disorder patients (ICD-10, F45.0) underwent psychometric testing and autonomic regulation analysis.
  • Autonomic function was assessed using frequency spectral analysis and baroreceptor sensitivity (BRS) measurements.

  • Patients were categorized into three groups based on BRS: low (<3.0 ms/mm Hg), normal (>9.0 ms/mm Hg), and intermediate.
  • Main Results:

    • No psychometric differences were found between extreme BRS groups.
    • Significant differences in mid-frequency spectral values were observed between groups (p < 0.05).
    • Patients with low BRS (<3.0 ms/mm Hg) exhibited significantly higher 24-hour blood pressure (p < 0.05 to 0.001).

    Conclusions:

    • Autonomic dysregulation, evidenced by abnormal BRS, is present in 17% of somatization disorder patients.
    • This dysregulation is associated with increased blood pressure.
    • The findings highlight the potential for co-occurring organic conditions in somatization disorder, even with non-specific symptoms.
