Summary
A rare case of papillary thyroid cancer complicated by abscess and infarction led to diabetic ketoacidosis and cardiac death in a young woman with type 1 diabetes.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Cardiology
Background:
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) are serious chronic conditions.
- Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of diabetes.
Observation:
- A young Jordanian woman with T1DM and IHD presented with DKA.
- The DKA was precipitated by acute neck swelling, suspected to be acute suppurative thyroiditis with abscess.
- Despite aggressive antibiotic and surgical treatment, the patient experienced a fatal cardiac event.
Findings:
- Operative tissue biopsy revealed an abscess within an infarcted papillary thyroid cancer.
- This represents a rare association of PTC with abscess formation and infarction.
Implications:
- This case highlights a rare and fatal presentation of papillary thyroid cancer.
- It underscores the complex interplay between endocrine disorders, cancer, and cardiovascular complications.
- Such rare associations warrant further investigation into potential underlying mechanisms and management strategies.
