Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Clinical Criminology

Background:

  • Risk assessment is crucial in clinical practice, encompassing static, stable, and dynamic factors.
  • Dynamic factors, often treatment targets, are less researched than static ones.
  • Understanding these factors aids in effective offender management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pretreatment, posttreatment, and change scores and reoffending in incarcerated men.
  • To identify key psychological mechanisms influencing sexual reoffending.
  • To enhance risk assessment and treatment strategies for sexual offenders.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of pretreatment, posttreatment, and change scores related to reoffending.
  • Examination of the role of prooffending attitudes, empathy, and fantasy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluation of affect scales, including trait and suppressed anger, in relation to recidivism.
  • Main Results:

    • Changes in prooffending attitudes were significantly associated with reduced reoffending.
    • Perspective-taking (empathy) and fantasy use emerged as potential key mechanisms.
    • Affect scales, except for anger reduction, showed limited predictive value for reoffending.

    Conclusions:

    • Shifts in prooffending attitudes are critical for preventing sexual reoffending.
    • Empathy and fantasy may be important targets for intervention.
    • Improved risk assessments and treatments require greater sensitivity to individual offense pathways.
