    Summary

    Oral propranolol enhances the exercise-human growth hormone (HGH) stimulation test, increasing both the number of responders and the magnitude of HGH release. This suggests propranolol improves diagnostic accuracy for HGH deficiency.

    Background:

    • The exercise test is used to assess human growth hormone (HGH) secretion.
    • Propranolol is a beta-blocker that may influence HGH release.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effect of orally administered propranolol on serum HGH responses to exercise.
    • To assess HGH responses in various groups including normal children, obese adolescents, and hypopituitary children.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum HGH levels were measured in participants after 20 minutes of exercise, 90 minutes post-oral propranolol administration.
    • HGH responses to exercise alone, hypoglycemia, and levodopa were also assessed in some participants.
    • The study included short normal children, obese teenagers, hypopituitary children, and healthy adult volunteers.

    Main Results:

    • Normal children showed adequate HGH responses, while obese girls exhibited blunted responses to exercise with propranolol and other stimuli.
    • Hypopituitary children did not respond to exercise with propranolol.
    • Adult volunteers demonstrated enhanced HGH responses to exercise with propranolol compared to exercise alone, with some showing anticipatory HGH secretion.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest propranolol can be a valuable adjunct in evaluating HGH secretion.
    • Anticipatory HGH secretion before exercise was observed in some individuals, possibly due to a conditioned response.
