Electrosurgery during laparoscopic procedures can cause ventricular fibrillation (VF) due to unintended electrical currents. Surgeons should understand electrosurgery principles and have cardioversion equipment available to ensure patient safety.

Background:

  • Laparoscopic bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding gastroplasty, is a common procedure for morbid obesity.

Observation:

  • Ventricular fibrillation (VF) occurred during the procedure while using a diathermic knife.
  • The patient's heart rate normalized after defibrillation.
  • The postoperative course was uneventful with no signs of heart failure.

Findings:

  • The VF was likely caused by unintended electrical effects from electrosurgery.
