Summary

Leprosy can severely affect the liver, causing significant elevation in liver enzymes. This case report highlights a unique instance of hepatic involvement in lepromatous leprosy (LL) not previously documented in medical literature.

Background:

  • Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease, primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves.
  • Hepatic involvement is known in leprosy, but typically presents with milder enzyme elevations.
  • Lepromatous leprosy (LL) is the most infectious form, characterized by widespread Mycobacterium leprae bacilli.

Observation:

  • A lepromatous leprosy (LL) patient presented with significantly elevated serum aminotransferase levels.
  • Extensive investigations ruled out other common causes of hepatic damage.
  • The observed hepatic enzyme elevation exceeded previously reported levels in leprosy literature.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited severe, previously undescribed hepatic involvement associated with lepromatous leprosy.
