Summary

Nanobacteria were not found in cases of dystrophic calcification, suggesting bacteria are not the cause. The origins of calcinosis cutis and related conditions remain unknown.

Background:

  • Nanobacteria are extremely small bacteria linked to calcium salt precipitation in urinary calculi and atherosclerosis.
  • The pathogenesis of calcinosis cutis and its association with cutaneous conditions is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential role of Nanobacteria in various forms of dystrophic calcification in skin conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrastructural examination of biopsy samples from patients with basal cell carcinoma, subepidermal calcified nodule, pilomatricoma, and tumoral calcinosis.
  • Specific search for the presence of Nanobacteria sp. within these calcified tissues.

Main Results:

  • Nanobacteria were not detected in any of the examined cases (3 basal cell carcinomas, 2 subepidermal calcified nodules, 3 pilomatricomas, 2 tumoral calcinosis).

Conclusions:

  • Bacterial involvement, specifically Nanobacteria, is unlikely to be the cause of dystrophic calcification in these cutaneous entities.
  • The etiology of these calcifying skin conditions remains undetermined.
