Mushroom poisoning can cause erythromelalgia in Europe. This syndrome, previously seen only in Japan, was observed in seven patients after consuming Clitocybe amoenolens mushrooms.
Area of Science:
- Toxicology
- Mycology
- Neurology
Background:
- Erythromelalgia is a rare condition characterized by intense burning pain, redness, and heat in the extremities.
- The syndrome has been previously documented in Japan following ingestion of Clitocybe acromelalga.
Observation:
- Seven cases of erythromelalgia following mushroom ingestion were observed over four years in the French Alps.
- All affected individuals consumed the same mushroom species, later identified as Clitocybe amoenolens.
- This mushroom is visually similar to the edible Lepista inversa, increasing the risk of accidental consumption.
Findings:
- The clinical presentation in these seven patients was consistent with erythromelalgia.
- This marks the first documented occurrence of mushroom-induced erythromelalgia in Europe.
- Clitocybe amoenolens, not previously known to cause this syndrome in Europe, was identified as the likely causative agent.
Implications:
- Recent mushroom poisoning is a potential cause of erythromelalgia in European populations.
- Accurate mushroom identification is crucial to prevent accidental poisoning and associated neurological syndromes.
- This finding expands the known geographical distribution and etiological factors for erythromelalgia.

Equipments Used to Measure Body Temperature
Glass-bulb Thermometer:
Glass-bulb thermometers are hollow glass tubes with a bulb tip containing liquid such as ethanol or mercury. Historically, glass bulb mercury thermometers were the standard device to measure body temperature. Today, mercury thermometers are prohibited in many countries due to the hazardous effects of mercury and the risk of exposure if the glass bulb breaks. In general,...
Assessing Body Temperature - Temporal Artery
Step 1: Perform hand hygiene and don a fresh pair of gloves to prevent cross-infection and ensure patient safety.
Step 2: Explain the procedure to the patient to establish trust. Clear communication establishes trust with the patient, ensures they understand what to expect, promotes cooperation, and enhances comfort during the procedure.
Step 3: Assess the patient's forehead...
