Induction of labour with prostaglandin E2 tablets.

B Bloch

South African Medical Journal = Suid-Afrikaanse Tydskrif Vir Geneeskunde
    |November 12, 1975

    Summary

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) tablets and desamino-oxy-tocin are effective for labor induction. PGE2 showed advantages in induction-to-delivery time and labor duration for multiparous women with high Bishop scores.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Reproductive Medicine

    Background:

    • Labor induction is a common obstetric procedure.
    • Cervical ripeness, assessed by Bishop score, influences induction success.
    • Various agents like prostaglandins and oxytocin are used for labor induction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) tablets and desamino-oxy-tocin for labor induction.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of these agents in relation to amniotomy in different patient groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Study involved two dosage regimens of PGE2 tablets and desamino-oxy-tocin.
    • Patients were categorized into multiparas (high Bishop score) and nulliparas (low Bishop score).
    • Amniotomy was performed in association with the induction methods.

    Main Results:

    • In multiparas with high Bishop scores, PGE2 demonstrated superiority in reducing the induction-to-delivery interval and labor duration.
    • Both PGE2 and desamino-oxy-tocin proved highly effective in this patient group.
    • For nulliparas with low Bishop scores, intravenous oxytocin following amniotomy was identified as the preferred method.

    Conclusions:

    • PGE2 is a highly effective agent for labor induction, particularly in multiparous women with favorable cervical conditions.
    • The choice of induction method should be tailored to patient parity and cervical Bishop score.
    • Intravenous oxytocin remains the method of choice for nulliparous women with unfavorable cervices requiring labor induction.
