Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the literature on laparoscopic repair of adult diaphragmatic hernias.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic repair for adult-congenital and chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernias.

Main Methods:

  • A MEDLINE search of English-language literature was conducted using terms "diaphragmatic hernia" and "laparoscopy."
  • Case reports of laparoscopic repair for adult-congenital and chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernias were reviewed.

Main Results:

  • Nineteen case reports of laparoscopic adult-congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair showed some complications, including enterotomies.
  • Eleven case reports of laparoscopic chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernia repair reported no complications or recurrences.
  • Laparoscopic repair was associated with shorter operative times, reduced hospital stays, less postoperative pain, and faster return to activity.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic repair is a viable option for adult-congenital and chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernias.
  • Despite limited experience, laparoscopic repair appears safe and leads to shorter hospitalizations.
