Summary

Malignant conjunctival melanomas can invade the cornea without conjunctival tumors, termed "corneally displaced malignant conjunctival melanoma." These rare tumors showed no recurrence or metastasis after excision.

Background:

  • Malignant conjunctival melanoma is a rare ocular tumor.
  • Understanding its varied presentations is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • This study identified and characterized malignant conjunctival melanomas with exclusive corneal invasion.
  • These tumors represented 5% of primary conjunctival melanomas.
  • Two types of corneal involvement were identified: separated from the limbus by clear cornea (type I) and paralleling the limbus without invasion (type II).
  • Two cases were associated with primary acquired melanosis.

Findings:

  • No recurrences or metastases were observed after local excision.
  • Median follow-up was 2 years and 5 months.
