Area of Science:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Water Resource Management
  • Urban Planning

Background:

  • The National Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database was launched in 1999 by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
  • It was developed under a cooperative agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency to standardize reporting of BMP test data.
  • The initial release included 71 BMPs and data entry software.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide the stormwater management community with a comprehensive database of BMP performance.
  • To present an overview of the database software and the results of data evaluation.
  • To detail the ongoing maintenance and expansion of the database through a national clearinghouse.

Main Methods:

  • Development of BMP performance evaluation protocols.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Application of protocols to existing data within the database.
  • Screening and addition of 42 new BMP data sets since the initial release.
  • Making the database accessible via the Internet at www.bmpdatabase.org.
  • Main Results:

    • The database now contains an expanded collection of BMP data.
    • Performance evaluation reports and project documentation are available online.
    • A national clearinghouse actively manages new data submissions and public inquiries.

    Conclusions:

    • The National Stormwater BMP Database is a continuously updated and valuable resource for stormwater management.
    • The database facilitates informed decision-making regarding the selection and implementation of effective BMPs.
    • Ongoing data collection and evaluation enhance the utility of the database for researchers and practitioners.
