Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) shows promise for treating depression in perimenopausal women. It may be effective alone or as an add-on to antidepressants, particularly for those with limited response to SSRIs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the efficacy of ERT in treating depression in perimenopausal women.
  • To assess ERT as a standalone treatment and as an adjunct to antidepressant therapy.

  • An 8-week open-protocol trial involving 16 perimenopausal women with major depressive disorder.
  • Participants received either ERT alone (n=10) or ERT plus fluoxetine (n=6).
  • Depression assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) weekly.
