Summary

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction after coronary surgery is not linked to changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF). This study found a uniform decrease in CBF after surgery, unrelated to cognitive outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between cognitive dysfunction and changes in regional cerebral blood flow (CBF).
  • To assess global and regional CBF using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in coronary surgery patients.

Main Methods:

  • SPECT and neuropsychological testing were performed on 15 coronary surgery patients before and after surgery.
  • Global and regional CBF were measured.

    • Preoperative global CBF was lower in patients than controls.

    • This CBF decrease is not correlated with postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
