Summary

Serum human chorionic somatomammotropin (S-HCS) levels increase during pregnancy, correlating with placental weight only after 37 weeks. Before this, a regulatory mechanism appears to maintain S-HCS levels independently of placental size.

Background:

Human chorionic somatomammotropin (HCS) is a placental hormone crucial for fetal development.
Understanding HCS dynamics and its relationship with placental weight is vital for monitoring pregnancy health.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the correlation between serum HCS concentrations and placental weight during the latter half of pregnancy.
To identify potential regulatory mechanisms influencing HCS levels relative to placental size.

Main Methods:

Radioimmunoassay was used to measure serum HCS levels.
Two study groups were utilized: a longitudinal series (n=47) and a cross-sectional series (n=346).
Data were analyzed to correlate S-HCS with placental weight across different gestational weeks.

Main Results:

Serum HCS levels showed a steady increase until 37-38 weeks of gestation, followed by a decrease.
A positive correlation between S-HCS and placental weight was observed only after 37 weeks.
Before 37 weeks, the S-HCS/placental weight ratio was higher in pregnancies with smaller placentae, indicating regulation.

Conclusions:

A regulatory mechanism appears to maintain stable S-HCS levels irrespective of placental weight before 37 weeks gestation.
This regulatory mechanism seems to diminish after 37 weeks, allowing S-HCS levels to correlate with placental weight.
