Summary

This study found a significant association between hyperthyroidism and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Newly diagnosed hyperthyroid patients showed mild PH, suggesting PH should be considered in hyperthyroid cases.

Background:

  • Pulmonary hypertension (PH) has been anecdotally linked to hyperthyroidism.
  • Evaluating the incidence of PH in hyperthyroid patients is crucial for clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of pulmonary hypertension in patients with hyperthyroidism.
  • To investigate the relationship between thyroid hormone levels and pulmonary artery pressure.

Main Methods:

  • Observational study involving 34 patients with hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease or nodular goitre).
  • Patients were divided into newly diagnosed hyperthyroid and euthyroid groups.
  • Transthoracic Doppler echocardiography was used to measure systolic pulmonary artery pressure (PAPs).

  • Mild pulmonary hypertension was detected in 7 out of 17 newly diagnosed hyperthyroid patients.
  • Mean systolic pulmonary artery pressure was significantly higher in the hyperthyroid group (28.88 mmHg) compared to the euthyroid group (22.53 mmHg).
  • A strong correlation was observed between TSH, free thyroxine (Ft4), and PAPs in the hyperthyroid group.

Conclusions:

  • Hyperthyroidism is frequently associated with pulmonary hypertension.
  • Pulmonary hypertension should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with hyperthyroidism.
