Shaping nursing practice. The United Kingdom perspective
1Department of Nursing Studies, University of Edinburgh, 40 George Square, Edinburgh EH89LL, Scotland, UK.
Abstract:
In summary, I present these suggestions for timescale, definition, focus and key issues.
Timescale:
I propose that we concentrate on the first decade of the 21st century, and certainly don't look beyond 2020, at least when discussing specifics.
Definition:
I suggest that we agree on a working definition of our field of discussion--nursing practice--whether in terms of the notion of The Nursing Constant or an alternative construct.
Focus:
My suggestion is that we focus on substantive areas in need of knowledge rather than the paradigms and processes of knowledge building, that is, what? rather than how?
Key Issues:
The key issues for 21st century nurse education and the drivers of change (Warner et al., 1998) are proposed (from the UK perspective) as a helpful basis from which to select issues for the proposed RCN/AAN collaboration on developing nursing knowledge for the 21st century.
