Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Infectious Eye Disease

Background:

  • Endophthalmitis is a serious eye infection.
  • Diabetes may influence endophthalmitis presentation and treatment response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore treatment response differences in diabetic versus nondiabetic patients with endophthalmitis.
  • To investigate if endophthalmitis signs and symptoms differ between diabetic and nondiabetic individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Exploratory analysis of patients from the Endophthalmitis Vitrectomy Study.
  • Random assignment to vitrectomy or tap/biopsy treatment.
  • 9-month follow-up with visual acuity assessment.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Diabetic patients (58/420) presented with worse vision and ocular media.
  • 39% of diabetics achieved 20/40 final vision versus 55% of nondiabetics.
  • Vitrectomy improved outcomes for diabetics with light perception vision.
  • Conclusions:

    • Diabetic status may impact endophthalmitis outcomes.
    • Vitrectomy appears more beneficial for diabetics with initial light perception vision.
    • Further clinical trials are required to confirm treatment differences in diabetic patients with better than light perception vision.
