Summary

Through-the-knee amputation (TKA) offers a viable solution for ischemic limbs when other treatments fail. An improved TKA technique achieved excellent stump healing and aesthetic results in 61 cases.

Background:

  • To evaluate an improved technique for Through-the-Knee Amputation (TKA).

  • A modified TKA technique was employed, involving removal of the distal 2 cm of the femoral head and condyles.
  • The patella was allowed to ankylose to the prepared distal femoral end.
