Amyloid Fibrils03:03

Amyloid Fibrils

12.0K
Amyloid fibrils are aggregates of misfolded proteins.  Under most circumstances, misfolded proteins are either refolded by chaperone proteins or degraded by the proteasome. However, in the case of a mutation or a disease, these proteins can accumulate to form large clusters and often further assemble to form elongated fibers, called fibrils.
Amyloid deposits were observed as early as 1639 in the liver and the spleen.   In 1854, Rudolph Virchow performed iodine staining,...

Schemas01:42

Schemas

12.4K
A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a zoonotic disease, poses risks to both cattle and human health, causing variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Implementing feed bans and rapid prion tests aids in BSE eradication and public protection.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Public Health
    • Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy affecting cattle.
    • BSE is a zoonotic disease, linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans.
    • Recent years have seen increased BSE reports in European countries, raising concerns about international trade and disease spread.

    Discussion:

    • The study highlights the slow adoption of protective measures by countries for both animal and human populations.
    • Concerns exist regarding the BSE status of nations importing cattle and products from affected regions.
    • Effective control strategies are crucial to prevent further transmission.

    Key Insights:

    • Extensive feed and offal bans are critical control measures.
    • Rapid prion protein tests in targeted animals and slaughter cattle over 30 months old are effective tools.
    • These measures collectively contribute to public protection and BSE eradication.

    Outlook:

    • Continued vigilance and adherence to control measures are necessary for global BSE eradication.
    • International cooperation is vital to manage the risks associated with cattle and cattle product imports.
    • Advancements in rapid testing technologies enhance surveillance and control efforts.
