Summary

The Organon Teknika MB/BacT system accurately detects tuberculosis drug sensitivity using direct drug susceptibility testing. Rifampin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide showed high sensitivity and specificity in this study.

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) treatment requires accurate drug susceptibility testing (antibiogram).

  • The Organon Teknika MB/BacT system is a nonradiometric automated system for microbial detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the direct-method drug sensitivity testing performance of the Organon Teknika MB/BacT system for principal tuberculosis treatment drugs.
  • To compare the MB/BacT system's results against the BACTEC 460 TB system as the gold standard.

Main Methods:

  • 50 sputum samples from pulmonary tuberculosis patients were tested.
  • Samples underwent decontamination and were inoculated into MB/BacT bottles containing specific anti-TB drugs (Rifampin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide, Ethambutol, Ethionamide, Streptomycin).
