Summary

Gastric hyperplastic polyps are usually benign, but can rarely contain carcinomas. Endoscopic polypectomy is a recommended treatment for polyps 0.5-1 cm to prevent complications like bleeding and anemia.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Gastric hyperplastic polyps are typically considered benign lesions.
  • Current diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for these polyps are not standardized.
  • Erosion of polyp surfaces occurs in approximately 90% of cases, posing risks.

Observation:

  • This case report documents the incidental finding of a carcinoma within a gastric hyperplastic polyp.
  • Forceps biopsy may miss focal areas of carcinoma, potentially leading to misdiagnosis.
  • Endoscopic snare polypectomy is suggested as a viable therapeutic approach for polyps measuring 0.5-1 cm.

Findings:

  • Carcinomas can be incidentally found within gastric hyperplastic polyps.
  • Endoscopic snare polypectomy is a reasonable therapeutic option for specific polyp sizes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complications following polypectomy are infrequent and typically do not require further intervention.
  • Implications:

    • Polypectomy addresses the risk of bleeding, chronic anemia, and occult blood in stool associated with eroded polyp surfaces.
    • Accurate histological assessment is crucial, as forceps biopsies may be misleading.
    • Standardized guidelines for the management of gastric hyperplastic polyps are needed.
