Fall risk in the elderly

Falls contribute to significant morbidity and mortality in the elderly. This article identifies a number of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that increase the risk for falling. Application of effective clinical strategies that have been identified through research to reduce the occurrence of falls is a necessary component of caring for the elderly. As this population increases, so must nurses' knowledge of implementing successful fall prevention programs.
