Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in serum total cholesterol levels and hypercholesterolemia prevalence in a Japanese population over time.
  • To investigate the association between lifestyle changes, particularly dietary habits, and cholesterol levels.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of three cohorts (1961, 1974, 1988) of residents aged 40+ in Hisayama, Japan.
  • Dietary habits assessed via interviews in 1965, 1985, and 1994.
  • Serum total cholesterol and hypercholesterolemia (> or = 220 mg/dl) prevalence tracked over the study period.

Main Results:

  • Serum cholesterol levels increased significantly (approx. 30 mg/dl) from the 1st to 2nd cohort, and further (approx. 20 mg/dl) to the 3rd cohort.
  • Hypercholesterolemia prevalence rose nine-fold in males (3% to 28%) and six-fold in females (7% to 42%) between 1961 and 1988.
  • Lifestyle changes included increased intake of animal fats/proteins and decreased carbohydrate intake, correlating with increased hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and diabetes.

Conclusions:

  • Westernized dietary patterns have contributed to rising cholesterol levels and hypercholesterolemia in the Hisayama population.
  • Lifestyle modifications are essential for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in this population.
  • Public health strategies should address dietary habits to mitigate cardiovascular risk.
