Noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) significantly improves the diagnosis of obstructive anuria compared to traditional methods. NCCT accurately identifies causes of obstruction, reducing the need for invasive procedures.

Background:

  • Obstructive anuria presents a diagnostic challenge.
  • Traditional imaging methods like plain abdominal x-ray (KUB) and ultrasonography (US) have limitations in determining the cause of obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic role of noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) in obstructive anuria.
  • To compare the accuracy of NCCT with combined KUB and US for diagnosing the cause of obstructive anuria.

Main Methods:

  • 40 consecutive patients with obstructive anuria underwent NCCT, KUB, and US.
  • Comparison with a control group of 57 patients with acute flank pain.
  • Reference standard included ureterography, ureteroscopy, or surgery.

  • NCCT demonstrated 100% sensitivity in identifying calculus obstruction, significantly higher than combined KUB and US (59.5%).

Conclusions:

  • NCCT accurately diagnoses the cause of obstructive anuria, outperforming conventional KUB and US.
  • NCCT can obviate the need for invasive and costly diagnostic procedures in cases where KUB and US are inconclusive.
