Summary

Tuberculosis may cause myelofibrosis. Treating tuberculosis in a 28-year-old man led to complete disappearance of his myelofibrosis, suggesting a direct link between these conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis and myelofibrosis are occasionally diagnosed together.
  • The causal relationship between tuberculosis and myelofibrosis remains unclear.
  • It is unknown if tuberculosis triggers myelofibrosis or if it occurs in patients with pre-existing myeloproliferative disorders.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old male patient presented with both tuberculosis and myelofibrosis.
  • The patient received standard antituberculous treatment.
  • Myelofibrosis resolved completely following tuberculosis treatment.

Findings:

  • The complete resolution of myelofibrosis after antituberculous therapy suggests a potential causal link.
  • Tuberculosis may induce or exacerbate myelofibrosis.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential etiology for myelofibrosis in the context of tuberculosis.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this association.
  • Clinicians should consider tuberculosis as a potential trigger for myelofibrosis.
