Summary

The superior cornea is thicker than the inferior cornea, but this difference is not immediately linked to chronic oxygen level variations. This study investigated corneal swelling under hypoxic conditions.

Background:

  • This localized hypoxia is suspected to cause increased oxygen uptake in the superior cornea.
  • The study aimed to assess chronic corneal swelling in the superior region due to upper eyelid coverage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the thickness profile of the vertical corneal meridian.
  • To determine the extent of superior corneal swelling after prolonged hypoxic stimulus.
  • To ascertain if upper eyelid coverage contributes to chronic corneal swelling.

Main Methods:

  • 16 male subjects (24-40 years) participated.
  • A polymacon lens was worn on one eye for 4 hours with the eyelid patched.

  • Corneal thickness was measured at five sites along the vertical meridian before and after patching.

    • At baseline, the superior cornea was significantly thicker than the inferior cornea at the 7.1 mm chord (p=0.0002).
    • Mean corneal swelling ranged from 70.5 μm centrally to 48 μm at the 7.1 mm chord.
    • Swelling extent was nearly identical between superior and inferior sites for both measured chord diameters.

    Conclusions:

    • The superior cornea exhibits greater thickness than the inferior cornea.
    • This baseline thickness difference is not immediately attributable to chronic differences in oxygen tension.
    • Further research may be needed to fully understand the factors influencing superior corneal thickness.
