Lingual cysticercosis--a case report.

Summary

Cysticercosis, a parasitic infection, is rarely the initial diagnosis for tongue swelling. This report details a unique case of lingual cysticercosis presenting as a solitary lesion.

Background:

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval cysts of the tapeworm Taenia solium.
It most commonly affects the central nervous system but can manifest in other tissues.
Lingual cysticercosis is exceptionally rare, often overlooked in differential diagnoses for oral swellings.

Observation:

A patient presented with a swelling on the tongue.
The lesion was isolated and did not exhibit typical signs of other common oral pathologies.
Initial clinical suspicion did not strongly point towards cysticercosis.

Findings:

Diagnostic investigations confirmed the presence of a cysticercus cyst within the tongue musculature.
This case highlights lingual cysticercosis as a rare but possible cause of isolated tongue lesions.
Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis.

Implications:

Clinicians should consider cysticercosis in the differential diagnosis of unexplained isolated tongue swellings.
Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and to prevent potential complications.
This case broadens the understanding of cysticercosis presentation in the head and neck region.
