Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Congenital Abnormalities
  • Intraocular Surgery

Background:

  • A 27-year-old male presented with progressive blurred vision in both eyes.
  • No prior history of intraocular surgery was noted.

Observation:

  • Slit-lamp examination revealed a pupillary white, thin membrane resembling posterior capsule opacification.
  • A naturally formed lens was absent.
  • Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed lens fiber rarefaction and loss of normal lens structure in the left eye.

Findings:

  • The patient had a congenital absence of the lens with secondary membrane formation.
  • Visual acuity was 20/32 (right eye) and 20/100 (left eye).

Implications:

  • Surgical management involving capsulotomy, membranectomy, anterior vitrectomy, and sulcus-fixed intraocular lens implantation resulted in high patient satisfaction.
  • The patient regained stereopsis, indicating successful restoration of binocular visual function.
