Summary

Upper ear piercing infections can cause ear collapse. Surgical reconstruction using costal cartilage frameworks successfully restored ear shape in four out of five patients with these deformities.

Background:

  • Infection following ear piercing can lead to severe chondritis and ear deformity.
  • Surgical reconstruction for post-piercing ear deformities is not well-documented.

Observation:

  • Five patients with post-piercing ear deformities were referred for autogenous tissue reconstruction.
  • Four patients underwent surgical intervention for ear reconstruction.

Findings:

  • A carved costal cartilage framework was used to replace destroyed ear cartilage segments in four patients.
  • Successful reconstruction of ear shape and form was achieved in the treated patients.
