Brain metastasis is an emerging complication in osteosarcoma patients. Early detection through regular neurological exams and imaging is crucial for patients with aggressive disease or poor treatment response.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Neurology
  • Pediatric Oncology

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma treatment has improved survival, altering relapse patterns.
  • Brain metastasis, once rare in osteosarcoma, appears to be increasing.
  • Multimodal therapy has enhanced survival rates for osteosarcoma patients.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric patients with osteoblastic femur osteosarcoma showed poor response to chemotherapy.
  • Both patients developed brain metastasis alongside or after lung metastasis.
  • Clinical presentations included symptoms of intracranial hypertension and complex partial seizures.

Findings:

  • Osteosarcoma patients with aggressive tumors and poor chemotherapy response are at risk for brain metastasis.
  • Concurrent or sequential lung and brain metastasis can occur.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Neurological symptoms may manifest as intracranial hypertension or seizures.
  • Implications:

    • Routine neurological examinations and neuroimaging are recommended for high-risk osteosarcoma patients.
    • Early detection of brain metastasis can improve patient outcomes.
    • This highlights the need for vigilance regarding central nervous system involvement in relapsed osteosarcoma.
