Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Fetal Medicine

Background:

  • Placenta accreta is often diagnosed unexpectedly during surgery.
  • Current ultrasound methods are effective for third-trimester diagnosis.
  • First-trimester ultrasound diagnosis of placenta accreta has not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • A case of placenta accreta was identified at 9 weeks' gestation via ultrasound.
  • Specific ultrasound findings included intraplacental lacunae and a diminished retroplacental myometrial zone.

Findings:

  • This case demonstrates the feasibility of diagnosing placenta accreta in the first trimester.
  • Ultrasound can identify key sonographic markers of placenta accreta early in pregnancy.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis of placenta accreta may allow for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.
  • This finding could lead to the development of standardized first-trimester screening protocols.
  • Further research is warranted to validate these early ultrasound findings in a larger cohort.
